New Year’s Eve revelers head to Las Vegas

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to make their way to Las Vegas for the big New Year’s celebration.

Allegiant Air says it will be helping more than 24,000 visitors arrive in the city. That’s how many people the airlines is flying on 170 flights to Vegas this week — that’s  a 60 percent increase from the same time last year.

Earlier in the day, 8 News Now was in the operations control center as Allegiant staff monitored flights across the country.

A  spokesperson said most passengers flying the carrier to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve were coming from California or Washington.

The influx of passengers is attributed to the holiday falling during a peak travel period. But the airport expects travelers from all over the country and world to visit this weekend, as well.

Some visitors already touching down Friday morning say there’s a buzz in the air on their flights.

“We had a layover in Indy and the flight went from 36 people to not an empty seat in the entire thing coming to Vegas from Indy,” said Mike Powers, visiting from Boston.

“It was exciting! Everyone was dressed up. They’ve got their bags, they’ve got their hats on. They’re like ‘what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ and they’re ready to party and we’re ready to party with them,” said Tiffany Travers.

Some passengers say they’re trip to Vegas goes beyond the Monday night celebrations and fireworks.

One group plans to visit the Grand Canyon while another will witness a friend’s elopement. Two men say they’ve come to see the Lady Gaga shows and attend a meet and greet.

Various reasons to come in and join the hundreds of thousands of people ringing in the New Year.
