BERKELEY (KRON) — Berkeley residents shouldn’t be alarmed to see a potentially low flying helicopter hover over the city on Wednesday.

Berkeley police on Tuesday alerted residents that the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) will be conducting a research project in the Bay Area this week.

The purpose of the flyovers is to measure naturally occurring background radiation, according to the NNSA.

The information will be used improve aerial radiation measurement capabilities used by local, state, and federal entities, the agency said.

Residents can expect to see a twin-engine Bell helicopter flying in a grid pattern over Berkeley, police said.

In some cases the aircraft may fly as low as 300 feet. It will be traveling at a speed of approximately 80 miles per hour, according to the NNSA.
