‘Not welcome here’: Vacaville homeowner receives threatening letter

News

VACAVILLE (KRON) — A Vacaville homeowner says he and his family were heartbroken and upset over a letter they received in their mailbox this week — one that questioned their interracial marriage and demanded they find a new place to live.

Homeowner Marc Yu told KRON4 that he, his wife and five children have lived in the neighborhood since November.

Yu is Chinese and Filipino and his wife is Mexican.

“My wife cried,” he said. “She was really devastated by it. She almost literally said ‘we need to sell our house.’ And I said ‘why.’”

The note they received accused the family of being renters and questioned how they could afford the home in the Vacaville neighborhood.

“It’s saddening that there’s people still out there [like this]. It’s 2019,” Yu said.

The letter read, in part, “The community is making this request that you find another place to live. Renters like yourself cannot possibly afford a home in our area.”

The letter went on to say that the family is not welcome in the community and that the author of the letter is going to get them evicted by their landlord.

“We family suggest that you rent somewhere else. We may sound harsh, but your interracial family is not welcome here, we will contact your landlord and tell them to evict you if you don’t vacate in the next 60 days,” the letter said.

Yu told KRON4 he owns his home. He says his family won’t be leaving.

Yu said this is the second letter he’s received from an anonymous person.

The anonymous author ends the letter by saying, “the clock is ticking.”

Both letters also reference his condition of the family’s front yard. It’s unclear if they were sent by the same person.

As for Yu’s message to the letter’s author?

“We don’t hate people, we really don’t. We try to be a loving family and be part of the community as much as possible,” he said. “So if I were to relay a message to this person it would be just leave us alone. Mind your own business.”

The Vacaville Police Department is investigating the letter.
