Safety measures in San Francisco ahead of New Year’s Eve

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — New Year’s Eve is a busy night of parties and fireworks in San Francisco, especially along the Embarcadero.

Emergency management officials say they’re ready.

Spokesman Victor Lim for the Department of Emergency Management says the safety effort will be city-wide and they’ll have additional resources available on New Year’s Eve.

“We’re gonna expand our activation with our emergency operations center,” said Lim.

Meaning the department will have police, firefighters and other first responders helping to coordinate city resources.

A big push this year is a new short code alert.

The department of Emergency Management says you can text NYE SF to 888777 to get emergency updates throughout the night.

“On New Year’s Eve starting after 8 p.m. we’ll be sending out updates on transit or any police, medical, fire issues,” said Lim.

It’s also important to keep in mind the cold temperatures in the forecast.

“Dress in layers maybe bring an extra hat some gloves and you know something warm,” said Lim.
