SAN JOSE (KRON) — San Jose police have arrested a 22-year-old man accused of killing and sexually assaulting a 2-year-old boy, police said.

Police said Manuel Lopez, of San Jose, was arrested on Tuesday for the death. Lopez was the victim’s mother’s boyfriend at the time, police said.

On Jan. 16, officers were called to the 300 block of El Cajon Drive on a report that a child was possibly dead. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

“Initial observations indicated the child had died as a result of a homicide and had been sexually assaulted which was confirmed by an autopsy,” Sgt. Enrique Garcia said in a press release. “Homicide detectives and Crime Scene investigators conducted an extensive investigation.”

Lopez was booked into Santa Clara County Jail for murder and child molestation. The identity of the child has not been revealed by police due to his age.
