SANTA CRUZ (BCN) — A Santa Cruz couple suffered serious injuries in a crash Friday morning in unincorporated Deschutes County, Oregon, Oregon State Police said today.

The crash occurred at about 10:20 a.m. on state Highway 20 west of Sisters, Oregon.

Dana Niehaus, 66, was driving a 2008 Audi sedan west on Highway 20 when he suffered a medical emergency that left him unconscious, a preliminary investigation by police shows.

The Audi drifted off the highway and struck a tree, according to police.

A state police officer saw the crash and arrived at the Audi at about the same time as an off-duty paramedic. The two discovered that Niehaus was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

They freed him from the car and began CPR. Paramedics arrived, continued CPR and took Niehaus to Saint Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon, where he is in stable condition, police said.

Jeannine Niehaus, 66, was a passenger in the Audi and had to be extricated. Once she was freed, she was also taken to Saint Charles Medical Center in Bend where she is in stable condition, according to police.
