SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A suspect knocked a South San Francisco police officer unconscious with a skateboard Thursday afternoon, according to police.

It happened around 2:20 p.m. when a resident told the officer about someone causing a disturbance at a business on Grand Avenue.

The officer tried approaching the suspect, but the suspect refused to cooperate with the officer.

Additional police officers were called the scene.

As another officer was coming, the suspect left on a skateboard.

The officer chased the suspect on foot for a short distance.

The suspect stopped, turned around and hit the officer in the head with the skateboard, according to police.

The officer became unconscious as the suspect ran away from the scene.

Additional police officers caught the suspect and took him into custody.

The police officer has a major head injury and has been taken to a local trauma center.

He is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.

The investigation into this case is ongoing

South San Francisco Mayor Mark Addiego was told of the incident and issued a statement.

“This is so disheartening to hear of this incident, in a City such as South San Francisco. We are a tight-knit community, with a police force that is our family,” Addiego said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with this officer and his family.”

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas of South San Francisco.

Ramos-Coreas has been booked into the San Mateo County Jail.

The name of the police officer injured is not being released at this time.
