Suspected DUI driver ID’d in deadly Fremont freeway crash


Police have identified a suspected DUI driver in a crash that killed three people Tuesday night on Interstate 880 in Fremont, according to California Highway Patrol.

The five-car accident happened around 9:30 p.m. on northbound 880 between Auto Mall Pkwy. and Stevenson Blvd.

21-year-old Dang Nguyen Hai Tran of San Jose was arrested for allegedly causing the crash while under the influence of marijuana, CHP said. He was driving a white Toyota Camry.

Three people ejected from an Escalade were pronounced dead at the scene. Another five people, including a baby, were taken to the hospital. They were all riding in the same car.

Four of the injured people are underage, and one of them is in critical condition, CHP said. 

The three people who died are initially identified as a woman, a young adult in their teens, and one minor. Their names were not released.

CHP isn’t sure if the victims were wearing seatbelts at the time fof the crash.

Their accident investigation team is working to reconstruct the accident to figure out how it happened.

I-880 northbound was shut down from Auto Mall Pkwy. to Stevenson Blvd. until just after 6:00 a.m.

The Traffic Alert has been canceled as all lanes are now open.
