These Bay Area zip codes are among America’s most expensive for renters

Are you a renter or a homeowner? 

The U.S. average rent reached $1,409 in July — the highest it’s ever been, according to nationwide internet listing service RENTCafe.

How does that compare to the Bay Area? 

Well, most of the nation’s expensive zip codes are located in Manhattan, New York, according to RENTCafe, bnut the Bay Area trails not too far behind. 

San Francisco’s 94105 zip code, which includes parts of The East Cut neighborhood and Embarcadero, made it to No. 6, with a monthly average rent of $4,666. 

San Francisco’s 94158 zip code, including Mission Bay, ranked No. 14 with a $4,336 average, and Corte Madera’s 94925 zip code ranked No. 18 at $4,290. 

Overall, Silicon Valley claimed 7 spots among the 50 most expensive areas for renting, including Redwood City, Menlo Park, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale. 

Here’s a look at which Bay Area zip codes made the cut and how they stacked up in the nationwide list: 

5. San Francisco: 94105 ($4,666)

14. San Francisco: 94158 ($4,336)

18. Corte Madera: 94925 ($4,290)

26. Redwood City: 94063 ($4,025)

29. San Francisco: 94103 ($3,974)

30. Menlo Park: 94025 ($3,960)

31. San Francisco: 94107 ($3,928)

33. Mountain View: 94043 ($3,854)

39. San Mateo: 94404 ($3,685)

41. Cupertino: 95014 ($3,681)

42. Mountain View: 94040 ($3,669)

45. Berkeley: 94704 ($3,616)

47. Sunnyvale: 94085 ($3,609)

If you’re looking for the cities with very cheap rent, look no further than Wichita, Kansas, where rent averages $422 to $490 (yes, a month), or Memphis, Tennessee where rent averages from $474 to a $498. 

Louisville, Kentucky; Huntsville, Alabama; and Decatur, Alabama also made the list with average rent around $500. 

The study, along with data from Yardi Matrix, collected apartment rent averages for every state and zip code in 130 U.S. markets, analyzing roughly 15 million apartment units.
