OAKLAND (KRON) — New details are emerging on Thursday night about a sex scandal swirling around the Oakland Police Department.
KRON broke the story two days ago, and we are getting a fuller picture about the internal investigation. At least three officers have already been put on administrative leave.
It all stems from accusations of sexual misconduct, an alleged sexual relationship with an underaged girl.
Hooking up on Facebook for sex with an underage girl is part of an investigation that led to the discovery of information implicating Oakland police officers with having sex with a minor, according to multiple sources.
Sources also tell KRON that the information was found in a suicide note left by Oakland police officer Brendan O’ Brien. He was found dead in his East Oakland apartment back in October 2015.
According to sources, Officer O’Brien’s death is being investigated as a suicide. In fact, KRON was told he was on paid leave at the time of his death, as a result of an investigation into his wife’s death.
She was found dead in the same apartment on Greenridge Drive a year earlier. She died from a bullet fired from the officer’s gun, sources told KRON.
“At this time, we are limited in what we can share with you because we have two open investigations,” Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.
Watson would not comment about the investigation into O’Brien’s death.
However, speaking on behalf of police chief Sean Whent she said:
“The Oakland Police Department takes this allegation extremely serious. We have put in place a team of investigators at internal affairs….We have been entrusted with the public’s trust. We have worked very hard to build community relationships. Any time that we have an allegation that is of this nature, it’s always a concern not only to us but to our community.”
Officer Watson confirmed that three officers have been placed on administrative leave in connection with these allegations.
Oakland police officials said in addition to the internal affairs investigation, there is also a criminal investigation into the alleged sexual misconduct.
