Video: Suspect stealing mail from Concord residents

CONCORD (KRON) — Someone is stealing mail from residents in an East Bay neighborhood.

Police tell KRON’s Haaziq Madyun they now have a lead on a possible suspect, who was captured on surveillance video committing the crime.

“He looked at his video surveillance, and he actually caught the suspect coming up onto his porch,” Concord police Cpl. Christopher Blakely said.

It happened Thursday at around 4 a.m. on the 2900 block of Atlantic Street in Concord.

“This is happening in the early morning hours, so you gotta think about it, there’s this suspect who’s walking around, looking at cars, looking off to people’s porches,” Blakely said.

He said in this case, several envelopes were clipped to the mailbox.

“They’re looking for money, they’re looking for other personal items, anything valuable they can sell or…they can use for their benefit,” Blakely said.

Some residents are concerned their mail may have been stolen.

“There (have) been a couple of days where we’ve had no mail, so maybe I will look into that,” resident Rachael Johansen said. “But I will be definitely checking my mail from now on and looking at the area.”

“He looks to be a white male adult, between the ages of 20 and 35 years old,” Blakely said. “He’s wearing a very distinct sweater with a big logo on the back, almost like a cartoon character,” Blakely said.

Police said he is out there at 3 or 4 o’ clock in the morning, creeping up on people’s porches and taking their mail. He could be doing other things like breaking into cars.

Investigators said this man may be responsible for other mail thefts in the area. Concord police are increasing patrols trying to find him before he strikes again.
