Woman who has months to live gets Christmas surprise

(WBAY) – When a Wisconsin family found out this was the last Christmas they would celebrate with their mother, friends gave them an unforgettable surprise.

When November 1 comes, every year, Colleen Cornell goes straight for the holiday decor, decking the halls of her home for her favorite holiday.

“Colleen loves Christmas and decorating is her thing. She starts listening to Christmas music the day after Halloween if not sooner, she starts preparing the house,” said Craig Cornell, Colleen’s husband.

For the first year ever, Colleen hasn’t had time to even think about her decorations.

“My wife has cancer. We found out a week ago Thursday that she only has a couple months left to live,” said Craig Cornell.

“We don’t know…our days are limited. Every day is a blessing,” said Colleen Cornell.

Friends wouldn’t let the Cornells spend their last Christmas together without the décor Colleen so loves. What they did next moved her to tears.

“We were at my son’s basketball game and we came home and friends from church put up Christmas,” said Colleen Cornell.

“I think there was like four or five families that came out here and did a decoration blast. She didn’t realize it was our house at first!” Said Craig Cornell.

“I was shocked,” said Colleen Cornell.

“It brought happiness to her, and it was a very kind gesture,” said Craig Cornell.

The Cornells say it’s a sign of the season, the true meaning of Christmas found in what’s been a tough year for them.

“There’s more to life than what we’re experiencing here, our challenges and our shortcomings,” said Craig Cornell.

“You never know who’s going to be here next year. Appreciate the people you have,” said Colleen Cornell.
