The San Francisco 49ers’ cheerleader who generated controversy online after she took a knee during the National Anthem Thursday, has been identified.

The photo was posted on Twitter by @GatorLenny and shows the woman kneeling with her hands on her hips, while the rest of her squad is standing in unison with their pom poms out.

Family members confirmed to KRON4 that the woman’s name is Kayla and she’s from Antioch.

She’s been a member of the Gold Rush for two years.

National Anthem protests by black athletes are nothing new and dates back decades, according to the New York Times, however former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the kneeling movement in 2016.

Kaepernick has been very vocal about what he claims is the country’s mistreatment of minorities. He said he was protesting police brutality against African Americans.

KRON4’s Dan Thorn reached out to Kayla to learn more about her motivations, but she declined.

The San Francisco 49ers are also not commenting at this time.
